Counselling in Harrogate | In-Person Therapy for Childhood Trauma, Relationship Difficulty & Anxiety
If you are based in or around Harrogate and looking for a therapist you can meet face to face, you are in the right place.
I offer in-person counselling and psychotherapy in a private, comfortable therapy room in central Harrogate — as well as online sessions for those who prefer to work from home. Whatever format suits you best, the work is the same: thoughtful, relational, and built entirely around you.
In-Person Therapy in Central Harrogate
Sessions take place in a private therapy room in the centre of Harrogate, easily accessible whether you are coming from Harrogate itself, Knaresborough, Ripon, Ripley, Wetherby, Boroughbridge, or the surrounding North Yorkshire area.
Many people find that having a dedicated space outside of home — somewhere that belongs entirely to the work — helps them feel more grounded and contained. A room that is only ever used for therapy, where what is said stays within its walls.
Sessions are available on weekday afternoons, evenings, and some daytime slots. If you are unsure whether you can make in-person work, get in touch and we can talk through what is possible.
What I Specialise In
I am an integrative psychotherapist and counsellor with NHS experience as a Senior Practitioner delivering CBT based therapy. I am also one of the few therapists in private practice with peer-reviewed academic research published on childhood maltreatment and autism. My practice has a particular focus on the long-term effects of early childhood experiences, relational patterns and low self-esteem. Many of the people I work with in Harrogate and beyond are not in crisis — they are simply living with something that has never quite shifted, and they are ready to understand it properly.
I work with adults experiencing:
The lasting effects of childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences
Childhood emotional neglect — the absence of attunement, safety, or consistent love growing up
Relational patterns that repeat across different relationships
People-pleasing, poor boundaries, and chronic self-doubt
Anxiety, low mood, and emotional disconnection
Low self-esteem and a persistent inner critic
Difficult or toxic family dynamics
PTSD and complex PTSD (CPTSD)
You do not need a diagnosis or a clinical label to reach out. If something is getting in the way of you living as fully as you would like, that is enough.
How I Work
I am a relational integrative therapist, which means I do not follow a single fixed method. I draw on person-centred, psychodynamic, and attachment-based approaches, shaping our work around who you are and what you need — not applying a programme by default.
What sits at the centre of everything is the relationship between us. Many of the difficulties people bring to therapy developed in relationships — in the way they were spoken to, seen or not seen, held or not held by the people who were supposed to care for them. If that is where the wound formed, a safe, honest, and consistent therapeutic relationship is often where healing begins.
I am warm and direct. I will not simply listen and nod. I will follow the thread of what you bring, ask the questions worth asking, and make sure every session moves you forward in some way — a new way of seeing something, a connection you hadn't made, a small but meaningful shift.
Why Choose Private Counselling in Harrogate
NHS waiting lists for therapy in Harrogate and North Yorkshire can be long — often six months or more. When they do offer therapy, it is frequently short-term CBT: structured, time-limited, and not always the right fit for difficulties rooted in early experience or complex relational patterns.
Private counselling gives you something different:
A start date that works around your life, not a waiting list
Sessions at a pace and frequency that suits you — weekly or fortnightly
Depth of work that is not constrained by a fixed number of sessions
A therapist who specialises in exactly what you are bringing
Sessions are £70 for 50 minutes. A 20-minute consultation call is available before you commit to anything.
Getting in touch is often the hardest part. You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out — you do not need the right words, a clear explanation of what is wrong, or certainty that therapy is the right thing.
Reaching out is enough.
I offer a no-obligation 20-minute consultation call — a chance to talk, ask anything you need to, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. There is no pressure and no commitment required.
